Challenge
A couple in their late 50s came to us by a CPA referral. They felt they were close to retirement, with several million of investable assets. Their children were successfully living on their own. The couple wanted to sell their Atlanta home and move to a lake house in north Georgia. Their then-financial planner told them they could retire immediately, buy the house, and live comfortably ever after. The problem was that he was wrong.
SOLUTION
The planner misjudged how much the couple could withdraw and what their asset allocation should be. We showed them a reasonable withdrawal rate with our interactive planning tools, and recommended a greater allocation to growth-oriented equities. They needed to work several more years to live reasonably at the beautiful house on the lake.
RESULTS
Aurora still manages their money today. We meet with them once a year, often at the lake house. Often difficult conversations helped create consensus about their need to delay retirement. They are now quite content and have plenty of happy years in front of them.
